Friendship Reflection
The Lord’s Day
June 7, 2026
Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi)
Scripture
First Reading — Deuteronomy 8:2–3, 14b–16a
Moses reminds the people of Israel how God led them through the desert, humbled them, fed them with manna, and taught them that:
“Not by bread alone does one live, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of the LORD.”
Responsorial Psalm — Psalm 147
“Praise the Lord, Jerusalem.”
Second Reading — 1 Corinthians 10:16–17
Saint Paul teaches that the Eucharist unites believers with Christ and with one another:
“Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body.”
Gospel — John 6:51–58
Jesus declares:
“I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.”
He teaches that His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink, and that whoever receives Him remains in Him and He in them.
Reflection — The Friend Who Gives Himself
Today's solemnity celebrates one of the greatest gifts Jesus has given His friends: His Real Presence in the Eucharist.
In every true friendship, there is a desire to be close. Friends want to spend time together. They share meals, stories, joys, and burdens. Love naturally seeks communion.
Jesus desires this even more than we do.
At the Last Supper and in the gift of the Eucharist, He did something astonishing. He did not merely leave us teachings to remember or memories to cherish. He gave us Himself.
In the Gospel, Jesus says:
“Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him.”
This is the language of friendship at its deepest level. The Lord desires not only to walk beside us but to dwell within us.
The first reading recalls the manna that sustained Israel in the desert. That manna was a foreshadowing of a greater gift. Just as God fed His people on their journey to the Promised Land, Christ now feeds His Church on our journey toward Heaven.
Saint Paul reminds us that the Eucharist also makes us one body. Friendship with Jesus always leads to friendship with His friends. At the altar we stand not as isolated individuals but as brothers and sisters gathered around one table.
For those who seek holiness through friendship with Jesus, the Eucharist is not merely a devotion. It is the heart of the journey.
Each Mass is an invitation:
Come and sit at the table of your Friend.
Come and receive His life.
Come and become what you receive.
Prayer
Jesus, Living Bread from Heaven,
Thank You for the gift of the Eucharist.
You did not leave us alone but remain with us in this sacrament of love.
Deepen my friendship with You each time I approach Your altar. Increase my faith in Your presence, my gratitude for Your sacrifice, and my love for Your people.
May every Holy Communion unite me more closely to Your Heart and make me a faithful friend to all whom You love.
Amen.
Intercessions
Jesus, Bread of Life, hear us.
For the Church, that she may always treasure and proclaim the mystery of the Eucharist.
For priests, who celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, that they may be strengthened in their ministry.
For those preparing for First Communion, that they may grow in love for Jesus in the Eucharist.
For the sick and homebound who long to receive the Lord, that they may be comforted by His presence.
For all Friends of Jesus, that we may become one in faith, hope, and love.
Friendship Challenge
At Mass today, spend a few moments after Holy Communion simply speaking to Jesus as a friend speaks to a friend.
Thank Him for one specific grace He has given you this year.
Journal Prompt
How has Jesus nourished, strengthened, or accompanied me through difficult seasons of my life, and how can I respond more fully to His gift of Himself?
Saint’s Note
The Solemnity of Corpus Christi celebrates the Real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Eucharist—His Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity. This feast invites us to renew our faith in the sacrament that has nourished countless saints throughout the centuries and continues to sustain the Church today.
Sending Forth
As you go forth today, remember that Jesus does not merely walk beside you—He desires to live within you.
Strengthened by the Bread of Life, go and share His friendship with everyone you meet. Let your words, kindness, and charity become a living witness that Christ remains present in His people.
Friendship with Jesus leads us to the altar; the altar sends us into the world. ✠
